Les premières cellules tendent à s’absorber mutuellement. Partant d’une population hétérogène, ces proto-cellules, évoluent par absorption d’autres cellules. Elles forment un cytoplasme où se développe le métabolisme ARN et un noyau contenant la machinerie de réplication et de transcription.
