Les cellules étoilées du foie activées lors d’une agression hépatique induisent une mort des hépatocytes. Les cellules étoilées acquièrent alors un phénotype myofibroblastique, caractérisé par : prolifération, contractilité, production en excès de matrice extracellulaire, chimiotactisme, et sécrétion de facteurs inflammatoires et immunomodulateurs aboutissant à une fibrose hépatique.
